| ‘Why Jonathan won’t
attend presidential debate’
From TAIWO AMODU, Abuja

Indication emerged yesterday that the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) presidential candidate, Dr Goodluck Jonathan may not attend
the debate, being organized for all presidential candidates for
the 2011 general election. There are 18 presidential candidates
for the 2011 presidential elections .
Addressing newsmen at Legacy House, Director of Publicity of the
Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), Abba Dabo disclosed that so
many media organizations had showed interest in organising presidential
debates but noted that many of them were not coordinated. He equally
cited an instance of a particular electronic outfit which insisted
on hosting only four presidential candidates for the event.
“How can you pick four candidates? Some of them even lack
the reach for such an important engagement. But we are still looking
at , whether the debates would hold but there is no serious arrangement,’
he said.’
While he told journalists that the campaign organization had told
the president on what to do with the envisaged presidential debate,
he was however not forthcoming on the position of the publicity
department of the PCC.
“We have discussed with Mr. President on what to do with the
issue of debate. But so far he has done what should be done. He
has addressed the people directly and has spoken about his manifesto,’’
he said.
Dabo described the statement credited to the Congress for Progressive
Change (CPC) presidential candidate, General Muhammad Buhari that
the electorate should guard their votes and confront election riggers
as inciting. “We’re not saying people shouldn’t
guard their votes; we have no problem with that. But he said they
should lynch, whoever steal votes...He said it in Kaduna and repeated
it in Minna.
“In contrast, Mr. President has said he wouldn’t want
to shed the blood of any Nigerian to be president. We feel very
sorry that somebody of Buhari’s status, could be inciting
Nigerians to violence.
“We have to bring it to his attention, so that it is not repeated.
Nigerians can protect their votes and there are enough sanctions
against rigging.’’
