Rivers State Police Command on Tuesday arrested 48 protesting repentant militants over non-payment of their allowances.
The arrests were sequel to two days of protests by the ex-militants during which some of them allegedly snatched items from members of the public.

Trouble started Monday when the ex-militants besieged the Rumuokwuta branch of the Oceanic Bank in Port Harcourt for their monthly stipends but were not paid.
Frustrated, the repentant militants blocked the adjoining roads and allegedly threatened to burn down the bank building.
It took the intervention of police teams and some Presidential Amnesty officials to calm the angry ex-militants and get them back to their camp at Aluu near Port Harcourt.

When the ex-militants returned to the bank the next day, they met heavy police presence and apparently frustrated, moved into Rumuola Street in protest during which some of them allegedly snatched a laptop and a cellular phone.
Confirming the arrests, Police spokesperson in the State, Dr. Rita Inoma-Abbey (SP) identified those involved in the alleged thefts.

She said that the repentant militants also damaged the vehicle of a former senior militant sent by former militant leader, Ateke Tom, to pacify them.
Dr. Inoma-Abbey said that all the arrested persons would be prosecuted.
In another development, scores of pregnant women Tuesday held a peaceful demonstration against the on-going strike by medical doctors in government hospitals in the State.

The pregnant women who marched to the Government House, Port Harcourt urged the State Government to meet the demands of the striking doctors.
They complained that the closure of the state-owned Braithwaite Memorial Hospital due to the strike has left many of them stranded because they could not afford the high fees charged by private hospitals.
